Sites Blocked Despite Being Whitelisted

If a domain you''ve added to the whitelist still gets blocked, the most likely cause is a caching issue. Flush the DNS cache on your device: on Windows run ''ipconfig /flushdns'', on macOS use ''sudo dscacheutil -flushcache''. Also check that your router is actually pointing to OpenDNS resolvers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) — mismatched settings are the most common culprit here.

Dashboard Not Reflecting Network Changes

Changes to filtering categories or domain lists can take up to 3 minutes to propagate. If after 5 minutes nothing has changed, verify your dynamic IP is still registered correctly. Use the IP updater client (like the official Dynamic DNS updater) — if your ISP assigned a new address and the dashboard still shows the old one, all your policy rules apply to the wrong IP.

Login Errors on the OpenDNS Dashboard

- Clear browser cookies and cache entirely, not just for the last hour

- Try a different browser — sessions sometimes get locked in Firefox or Chrome after an update

- If you use SSO or a linked account, check that the email address matches exactly, including letter case

- Reset the password only via the official ''Forgot password'' link; multiple failed attempts trigger a temporary lockout

DNS Resolution Fails for Specific Domains

Run ''nslookup example.com 208.67.222.222'' to test resolution directly against the resolver. If you get a response there but not from your machine, the issue is local — check that no other DNS server is hardcoded in your network adapter settings overriding the OpenDNS addresses.

Stats and Logs Not Loading in Dashboard

- Disable browser extensions, especially ad blockers — they routinely break dashboard analytics widgets

- Switch to a private/incognito window to rule out extension interference

- Check that JavaScript is fully enabled; the stats page relies heavily on it

High Latency on DNS Queries

If pages feel sluggish and DNS lookups are taking over 100ms, check your router''s DNS cache settings. Some routers don''t cache DNS responses at all, sending every single query upstream. Enable DNS caching on the router level if possible, or configure it directly on end devices to reduce round-trip overhead.
